Hill 243, 14th July 1943

After a considerable pause, for various reasons, we once again ventured onto the remote tabletop for some more PBEM action. This time we set the steppe aflame in a classic Ostfront armour clash from 1943.

The Soviets have a Mechanised Brigade of one Tank Regiment and 3 Motorised Rifle Battalions on Hill 243, and a Tank Brigade in the woods to SW. In addition they have a Motorcycle Battalion, an AT Battalion and Mortar Regiment. a Guards (Katushya) Mortar Battalion and Artillery Battalion they can deploy where they like. A Guards Tank Brigade is in reserve due to arrive some time after turn 6. These all from part of 'Chatco' Mechanized Corps ('Chatco' is an in-joke which I won't bother to explain, but you'll see it features quite a bit as the battle progresses.)

The attacking Germans have a reinforced Panzer Battalion with two additional Panther Companies and one Tiger company, supported by a Motorised Fusilier Regiment from the Gross Deutchland Division and attached off-table artillery

In addition I factored in random air attacks for both sides.
'Aerial Photo' of Battleground. Soviets have to deploy 1st Mechanised Brigade on Hill 243, and 49th Tank Brigade in the woods to SW, their other forces can deploy where they like except for the reserve Guards Tank Brigade. Germans are arriving from East (right side).

Crafthole took his usual position as the Fuhrer's fireman, Krafhollern, in command of the Germans, whilst Edmund was given the honour of commanding Stalin's Soviets. As usual the names of commanders of various forces were given names of  'Russified' or 'Germanified' versions of mutual acquaintances, sometimes taking on the characteristics of the person concerned, sometimes acting completely out of character. Occasionally (as you may be able to work out) the same character features in both line ups but with different 'interpretations' of their name.

Soviet Deployment

Right

Have to do this on a tiny screen. All artillery off board

On 243, mech brigade (which seems mad) leave positioning up to commanders in the ground. Those units that have time, dig in try and create defence in depth if you can, remember they will come around the sides of the hill

AT Artillery on hill behind, your job is to pop tanks that come around the hill into the plain between the hills they should be able to shoot N And S as well as E, position accordingly

Sod it, I want to see Katushyas, put them behind the W hill.

Motorbike boys guarding AT on W hill

14th tanks and 1 mech at W side of 243 facing W. Their job is to come out and fight as the beasts come round the hill or provide flanking attack

That’s it

No time for map

I sense disaster

-You also have the 1707th AA Regt with 2 AA batteries, where do you want those?

Rear hill

If that’s in range of things attacking big hill

-It'll be further away, that is the nature of geography

Yes but range to give cover

-Nope

Well can they be split between the hills?

-Yup

German Plan of attack

Operational map And unit initial attack echelons. Full Orders will follow later; but will pretty much be GruppeB Chaaaaaaaarge! Gruppe B support coys form on the small hill with mortars behind hill and A\T on left flank. Tigers to lend fire support to steady advance of Panthers onto Hill 242. Infantry coys to follow up to support panthers.  Brig and Regt HQ also form up either end of little hill without bunching up into Katyusha fodder

The second ref to gruppe B is really Gruppe A!!!!!!

-and it's also hill 243!!!!
-...I'm now imagining your staff looking confused, calling for the map draw to be rifled, in an effort to locate hill 242....

No doubt a stolen and misnumbered Soviet map
All arty 8 Rounds HE and 2 smoke. 120 Mortars to be on board and dedicated to Fusiliers. 120 Arty dedicated to Fusiliers. 150 Arty dedicated to Panzer Bttn.

120s and 150s lay smoke ahead of first move at just over hasty advance range of lead elements of each group. Everyone hasty advance first turn behind the smoke. HQ and mortars to position on the low knoll that is located to front of southern group.

Vorwarts!

Report to Soviet Command after Turn 1

..aand we're off!!! You can see nothing due to smokescreens that plumpf  in front of your troops, To NE and SE of Hill 243. You hear the rumbling of many tanks. Many, many tanks

Orders from Soviet Command For Turn 2

Good

Can we rain some random shots with the artillery?
And when can I move the tanks on the woods?

-You have no targets for your artillery, and you didn't preplan any fire
-You can move the tanks in the woods whenever you like

Preplan fire?

-It was in the briefing you didn't bother to read

I mean shelling an area and seeing if it hits owt.
It’s what a lot of bombardments are

-I quote "...you can also 'preplan' bombardments before the game starts, particularly useful for putting down smokescreens etc when you haven't spotted anything but suspect where the enemy are."

-Otherwise you call in artillery when you see something

Oh ok
I can see a smokescreen

-You are welcome to bombard the smokescreen, but your artillery (who are in general support as you didn't attach any so therefore covering the whole front) will tell you to f**k off and not waste shells until you can see an actual target

We may have lots of shells
But I will wait

-No you only have 10 rounds for each battery

What???
At Kursk?
Then don’t go shooting at smoke!

-Exactly Comrade!

I’m glad you agree

-Glad to keep you on the Party line...
-...Stalin's Party Line, Phone 0800-USSR-1917 for some Comradely advice

Report to German Command after Turn 1

aand where off!!! You can see nothing due to smokescreens in front of your troops

German Orders for Turn 2

Text book picture of Panzers advancing across a Steppe!

Has the Gruppe HQ , mortars etc reached that little low hill?

How long does the smoke last?

-Gruppe hq are at the low hill, mortars will disembark next turn. The smoke will dissipate unless you keep stoking it each turn

All HQ units halt to call in support fires. Forward armour elements to split 1/2 and 1/2 cautious advance and stop and overwatch.

Tigers cautious advance following Panthers.

Fusilers ........cautious advance and dismount to support the armour they are with.

Kleinwald m/c recon the southern road until contact.

Pzr Bttn. Pzr IIIs to be bulk of cautious advance. Pzr IVs bulk of overwatch.

Vorwarts!

Take the hill. Schnell! Schnell!

Report to Germans after Turn 2

Mein General!

The smokescreens lift to reveal the slopes of Hill 243 swarming with Reds!

A brief but fierce firefight ensues!

To the North with Gruppe B, A PzIII spots multiple Tanks behind the ridge, before it is taken out! It is almost as if they were expecting some kind of envelopment!

The Red infantry to the front open up with everything they have, but hit nothing!

You then return fire! Casualties amongst the Soviets are severe. It is too much for them, as if by an agreed signal, the remnants arise with their hands held high, throwing their weapons to the ground, and slowly move towards your panzers, shouting "Kamerad! Kamerad!" surrendering!

To the South, Gruppe A, A Panther is peppered by multiple ATR fire, a last lucky shot finds its mark and the Panther bursts into flame!

But your counter-stroke is terrible!

You mow down Reds like flies! It is too much for them and they flee over the other side of the hill!

Further back your Fusiliers come under desultory Mortar fire as they dismount, but I feel this fire won't continue for much longer

Kleinwalde reports he can see nothing.

What Orders Mein General?

Orders From German Command for Turn 3

Are there targets available and spotted for artillery and mortar stonking? Ivan appears to be pretty packed, making for a plum target if so.  Also any word from the fly-boys?

-Gruppe A have no targets, they've all run. Gruppe B can see the aforementioned tanks. No sign of the Luftwaffe as yet

-You don't have any stands that can see the tanks to call in fire

Gruppe A. Armour Cautious advance onto the hill and start fish in a barelling. Any that already have spotted targets halt to shoot.

Gruppe A Infantry close up with the armour. hasty.

Gruppe B. Armour already with targets to halt and destroy. Any without cautious move to contact.

Gruppe B Infantry dismount and close up with the armour cautiously

Pack my maps up from the bonnet. Looks like I'll be moving forward soon.

Kleinwalde can continue recon, but advise some caution.

Vorwarts!

I fear Kleinwalde will need another pair of new glasses soon :)

Report to Soviets After Turn 2

Comrade!

The curtain of smoke lifts to reveal Panzers! Panzers everywhere!

Stalin save us! We have taken out one or two, but they are making the hill a hell!

An entire battalion to the North surrenders and one to the South flees in panic!

Your reserve, waiting for an envelopment is facing the wrong way! The Fascists have treacherously tried the direct approach!

What Orders Comrade?

Orders from Soviet Command for Turn 3

14th and support sweep round to into the plain and go NE to flank them

Artillery rain fire on the Hun!

Tanks in woods come out!

Report to Germans after Turn 3

Herr General!

Your troops continue their cautious advance, as all the Reds have run they have no targets to engage.

Gruppe B to North, They advance over the crest of Hill 243 to see a mass of Reds, some fleeing to the west but  most are hastily redeploying to the North, including a large force of tanks.

They immediately engaged the tanks and within a few minutes half of the Red armour was blazing, and the other half have abandoned their tanks and are moving towards you with their hands held high!

The plain here is now littered with burning and abandoned tanks!

Kleinewalde reports another large force of tanks, with infantry in trucks supporting, have debouched  rapidly from the woods! Fortunately they were too distracted by your Tigers and Panthers on the Hill to pay him much attention. A desultory long range duel has commenced, but no casualties on either side so far.

And now I have to report a most shameful episode!

One of Towan's Panther Kompanies clearly did not get the memo and have pulled back in a bit of a flap towards your HQ!

What Orders Herr General?

German Orders for Turn 4

I Love the smell of burning T34s in the morning!

Gruppe A Command track halt to shoot and direct fires. Panthers and Tigers commence long range duel with newly arrived Soviet armour. .

Gruppe A retreated Panthers rally and get them into the wheatfield to their front to form left flank.

Gruppe A infantry close up with their armour and go to ground

Gruppe B armour. Half shoot to cover cautious advance in pursuit of broken enemy armour by the rest. Command track to halt to shoot and direct support fires

Gruppe B infantry close with their armour and go to ground

(expecting the Stalin's Organs any moment)

HQ gruppe hot tail it forward to Hill 243. Mortars to stay where they are. A/T gun to move forward with the 2 Panthers into the wheatfield to prep an A/T ambush on flank.

All Fusilier trucks to close to within a move to rear of their dismounts.

Kleinwalde is free to find cover  from which to spot fires from

Feuer, wie du sie tragen!!!!

Report to Soviets after  Turn 3

Comrade!

We have attempted to redeploy your reserve to the NE, but the Fascists are advancing too fast!

They have taken out almost half of the 14th Tank Regt, and the rest have abandoned their tanks! They are walking towards the Fascists, their hands held high in surrender!

The plain here is now littered with burning and abandoned tanks!

Your infantry continues its redeployment to the NE, but is now very much in the open and at the mercy of the Panzers!

Mumvyod's 14th Tank Brigade have debouched rapidly from the woods and have started to engage the Tigers and Panthers on Hill 243, but the distance is very great

Your artillery report they have not had any calls for fire, probably because all your infantry are too busy running to call in fire, however you can start to see fascist scum from your position yourself now (almost too clearly!), as can the Artillery FO posts, so should be able to start calling in fire yourself next turn.

What Orders Comrade?

Soviet Orders for Turn 4

Hummm the table is a lot smaller than I had imagined

Anyway

Tanks from woods continue to deploy

All we can do is fight it out at the centre and bring up the other tanks

Soviet courage and the fighting spirit of the working man will win the day!

Report to Germans for Turn 4

Herr General!

A huge stonk from Stalinorgel has hit the Hill around Gruppe B!

However no damage done, your panzers are too tough and you infantry halted at the edge of the bombardment.

However a couple of Red armoured cars took out a PzIII before we turned them into blazing wrecks!

A Stuka has also made an appearance, but, as usual, has not hit anything!

Having no armour left to target, your panzers have turned their attention to the infantry, causing another battalion to surrender!

There is nothing much left to shoot at here now!

Over at Gruppe A, our Tigers and Panthers have taken out most of the T-70s and a few T-34s causing some of them to pull back.

The Shaken Panther Kompanie is starting to pull itself together, after you have done a bit of shouting and pistol waving.

Kleinwalde reports an armoured car skidded to a halt right in front of him, and shot wildly over his head, he has observed a battalion of Red Infantry dismount from their trucks and march towards the hill, he regrets to inform you he doesn't have the authority to call in artillery, that must come from an Oberst or higher.

None of your commands managed to call in artillery this turn, the batteries are clearly having some difficulty in hearing instruction over the din of exploding T-34s

What Orders Herr General?

German Orders for Turn 5

Anyone who can call fire on the new infantry to the south? If so.....do so. Arty and mortars. Panthers and Tigers on hill continue to pick off enemy armour....and if they run out of that lay on with HE into the infantry

Gruppe A, 1 company of fusiliers to shift left to support A/T gun and the panthers moving into the wheat field.

Kleinwalde will no doubt do what Kleinwalde does. If he can bag an a/c all the better.

Kampfgruppe HQ continue to close onto Hill 243 to get a good view over ground beyond. 2nd coy of Fusileers continue to move to provide infantry support to panthers and tigers on hill then dig in.

Gruppe B Armour to advance half hasty westward with half including HQ providing covering fires. Stonk with arty any enemy visible

Gruppe B infantry skirt around the barrage to support their armour.

Get the mechanics and recoverers up to start recovering usable wrecks and abandonments

Vorwarts!

How many Ivan wrecks and prisoners? Start questioning some of the latter and look for operational maps to give clue as to numbers etc. Intelligence, intelligence, intelligence

Report to Soviets after Turn 4

Comrade!

A huge Katushya stonk has finally been called in by Skoravitch on the hill!

My it looks impressive!

But as there are only Panzers on the hill we fear it has not done much damage

Skoravitch's Katushyas only have enough rounds for one more round of fire, and it will take them all the next turn to reload.

Bashvyod's AT guns are at extreme range so are holding fire so as to not reveal their positions

Given no further orders Homesvitch has attempted to continue North-East, but another battalion has surrendered !

He has now lost all his armoured cars as well as all the tank crews surrendering, and is under air attack!

He is preparing to make a last stand with his Brigade Staff

Mumvyod reports a third of his tanks now lost, and he has had to regroup.

His infantry have finally arrived and are making their way towards the hill.

What Orders Comrade!?!

Soviet Orders for Turn 5

Rows of little lorries on the hills...

Anyone in the plain get to the hills in good order

Everyone else hold

Report to Germans after Turn 5

Herr General!

Gruppe B continue to advance cautiously, the barrage here as lifted.

They have spotted a group of mixed tanks and infantry advancing towards them, and have engaged.

It seems the enemy managed to pull back some of their abandoned tanks and recrew them.

If you wish to issue the order we can regroup some of your own panzer companys

We have called for an interpreter to come forward to interrogate the captured russkies, no maps have been found and we suspect none were issued. There are approximately 40 enemy tanks burning to your front.

We have finally managed to call in the artillery, who are targeting the two infantry groups to  their front.

However some of the Red artillery has found it's range and has started to pummel your fusiliers in Gruppe A.

Your Panthers and Tigers continue to pick off the enemy tanks, and have also taken out a fair few infantry

The AT gun should be in a position to set up in the wheat field shortly, the supporting Panthers have now pulled themselves together and will also advance shortly.

Your HQ is now in position and has a good view from the top of Hill 243

What Orders Herr General?

Orders from Germans for Turn 6

I am looking forward to reading Simonski's comms logs ........I have to wonder why Ivan is now coming to us rather than waiting. Hey ho! Come on in the same old style.......etc.

Yes recover, repair and re-crew usable non runners.

Quickly paint Iron Crosses on any T34s that change ownership.

Ach Zo!

Gruppe A. Continue to deploy a flank Fusilier company with the A/T gun in the wheatfield backed up by the Panthers to their rear

Gruppe A Tigers and Panthers otherwise continue to engage enemy armour at suitably lovely long range and when they run out of tanks shell enemy infantry.

Gruppe A Arty and Mortars stonk the enemy infantry that will insist on pressing forward.

2nd Fusileer company dig in in support of Panthers, Tigers and HQs. Expect a pasting any moment from arty and no doubt some damn Stormoviks.

Gruppe B: Leading armour halt to pick off enemy armour at range. Rear echelon of armour and infantry to close up with the lead elements (cautiously). Except any tracks that are directing fires, which are to continue to bring down the 150s on the nearest enemy infantry.

Use our advantage in long ranged tank gunnery to maximum advantage.

Try and raise Kleinwalde and check nothing is slipping around our extreme left.

Engagieren, zerstören und brennen!

Report to Soviets after Turn 5

Comrade!

Good News!

 No one ran this time!

We have also managed to salvage some of those who abandoned their posts on the hill, and have sent them forward again, they were only too delighted, after Commissar Formanov gave them a pep talk.

However, the Fascists continue to pick off our tanks

And have now ranged in their artillery on our infantry

But we have managed to range in our mortars on their infantry, who are now on the hill

and have still managed to pick off one or two of their panzers.

Mumvyod continues his advance

What orders Comrade?

Soviet Orders for Turn 6

Mortar and rocket their infantry to pulp

In the centre close and destroy their tanks, concentrate on tigers and panthers

Tank infantry swamp those tanks close in and destroy. Rush them and destroy, destroy, destroy! Use vehicles to close if possible, get close... swamp the fascists!

Mumvoyod must advance!

Report to Germans after Turn 6

Herr General!

Over at Gruppe B we have a text book advance, the infantry are closing with the tanks who are leapfrogging across the steppe

The Reds opposite them continue to advance, harassed by more ineffective bombing from the Fliegers.

and they continue to be grist to out meatgrinder.

We have even taken out one of their few staff radio trucks!

Progress is more mixed over at Gruppe A

Here we have come under equally ineffective jabo attack

But another huge stonk from Stalinorgel has caused one of your fusiler company's to fall back demoralised after taking casualties

you set a better example at HQ, standing calmly by your radio halftrack!

As has Von Spandl, who is showing equal coolness under fire

The other Fusilier company (the one heading towards the flank) has been completely wiped out by a combination of mortar fire and the advancing Red Infantry here.

However we continue to steadily take out everything that moves with our panzers and artillery

and the Panthers have now pulled up in the wheatfield in support of the AT gun on your flank

Kleinwalde apologises for the delay in his report, he has had a duel with some enemy motorcyclists! and has come off the better.

So far his spectacles are intact, but he reports he cannot see any more than you can from the hill

What Orders Herr General?

German Orders for Turn 7

See how I predicted the Organista! Getting a bit windy up here on this hill!

Gruppe B. Continue their leap frog attack towards the road maintaining the 150s on enemy infantry. Half and half cautious moves and overwatch fires all round.

Gruppe B. Rally that infantry company and see if we can form an ersatz replacement platoon from survivors of the other. Otherwise Panthers and Tigers continue to destroy anything in their sights.

Two panthers and A/T gun in the wheatfield ambush at effective range.

Kleinwalde carry on!

Continue to bring 105s and mortars down on enemy infantry approaching the wheatfield.

Gott Mit Uns!

Is Counter-battery a thing? Or send the fly-boys looking for the Organs?

-Well, in theory not a thing if off board...but you have noticed an immense amount of flash coming from behind the small rise to the NW...

Stonk it! He brought them on? He's mad!

-he wanted pictures of them...of course I'd have taken pictures of them anyway!

Shift the 150s onto them.

Report to Soviets after Turn 6

Comrade!

Homesavitch  continues to desperately throw men and tanks forward, but the fascists are relentless!

His entire staff have been consumed in a ball of flame!

They even shower his men from the skies!

However our own flyboys have finally put in an appearance, even though they cannot seem to hit anything!

Skoravitch has placed another massive Katushya bombardment on the hill, and he is rubbing his hands in glee!

Surely nothing can live in such a sea of flame!

However he reports his ammo is now finished!

The armour on the hill continues to whittle away your forces, but Mumvyod reports he is now ready to recommence his advance in support of his infantry with his tanks

His infantry report a short but sharp engagement with some infantry to the S of the hill, who they have wiped out to a man with the assistance of Benvorod's mortars.

and we have a message from Yantoveyn

His Crack Guards Tank Brigade are ready to take the field

Homesavitch sent one last appeal for help before we lost radio contact!

What Orders Comrade?

Soviet Orders for Turn 7

Where do the guards arrive?

-From the West edge, as detailed in the briefing etc etc

Problem is with briefings is as they aren’t emailed I can only read them by scrolling up and up on my phone

Then zooming in to tiny tiny writing

-well if you wanted it emailed why didn't you ask? It was you who wanted these things to run on messenger rather than email in the first place!

Did I? I mean the background stuff... it’s always tricky, but it adds to the fog of war hell. Anyway .. I will ponder

[Some time later]

-what have you pondered?

[some time later]

-Well, anything?

[I wait, time passes...]

-I might have to start imposing deadlines

Ughhh

Oh this is a nightmare

-Quite

They come from the NW to the N of the small hill. Mortars and AT guns make for small hill and deploy

3 tanks Batts with infantry support lay into the main body of Hun in the valley, try and get them in the flank

Let’s have a lady stonk and barrage in that area first though, rain down shot on them

But before the tanks go in (I know you)

Others hold as best they can until the reinforcements arrive

Mymbyvod  however presses on

-see, wasn't so difficult now was it?

-lady stonk?

Yes

That’s what I said

Make it happen

Have I crushed him yet?

I’m utterly confident of final victory

Report to Germans after Turn 7

Herr General!

Gruppe B (by which I assume you meant Gruppe A) have started to regroup some of your infantry, but the heavy Mortars which took out one company have shifted to the demoralised one, and are starting to pick them off.

More Tanks have attempted to advance against us but we have picked them off easily, however the Reds shower us with fire so we have had to button up.

However the panthers towards the centre are still well clear and have taken out the remnants of the infantry battalion to their front.

Over at Gruppe B (by which I assume you meant the actual Gruppe B) your steady advance continues. However here also the Reds have also  caused us to close hatches.

Our own fusiliers here have also now come under a barrage as well as small arms fire and most of the company have been wiped out.

and to your front you see more tanks advancing, supported by infantry! However your tank gunners have already started to take them out, even though they are somewhat harassed by jabos.

We have redirected the 150s to where the large amount of flash was spotted behind the hill, and they may have hit something as a sizeable explosion has been observed.

What Orders Herr General?

German Orders for Turn 8

Gruppe B. Rally as much of the infantry as possible. Shift the 150s onto the infantry closing with the armour. PzrIIIs HE and MG infantry. PzrIVs continue to pick off enemy armour.

Gruppe A. Rally as much of the infantry as possible. Get the 105s and mortars onto the infantry harassing our armour. Panthers and Tigers .....as you were keep destroying anything and everything in sight.

Frankly overrrunning enemy infantry with armour as soon as they come under our barrage can be countenanced. 75 AT gun and supporting Panthers, target of opportunity.

Kleinwalde to do as Kleinwalde does.

Report to Soviets after Turn 7

Comrade!

Spasibo for you clear yet concise instruction!

Mumvyod has thrown forward his tanks once again but the hated Fascists have picked them off, he now has only his own platoon left, and that harassed by airstrikes!

However he is harassing the panzers enough for them to close their hatches, this will no doubt make their fire less effective, if only we still had some tanks to take advantage of this!

Yantoveyn's Guards have arrived on the field with much elan!

But their panzers are already eating into his tanks like so much Borscht!

Here also we harass the panzers enough for them to button up!

Your 'lady stonk' also seems to be doing much damage to his infantry!

But I fear we put the katushyas too far forward as the very noticeable flash from their launchers has attracted a massive counterbarrage taking half of them out, Skoratvitch has withdrawn what is left, shaking his fist and ranting at the krauts!

Luckily he was out of ammo anyway!

What Orders Comrade?

Soviet Orders for Turn 8

This is going so well

I dread the crowing

All the other victories will count for nothing!

There is no way out now

We continue the attack in the north. Can we lay down smoke on the big hill? despite the smoke wreckage etc they seem to be playing sniper sniper with panzers, which is annoying. We still need to close and cut a furrow through them. So continue to attack on all fronts, no retreat

-Unfortunately you didn't tell your artillery to bring any smoke rounds

hummmm

-Ok well I might let you have one round of smoke, or it's going to be a rout

yes...we don't want to rout him

-Careful I might change my mind!

Report to Germans after Turn 8

Herr General!

Before we could even pick up the radio receiver to our batteries smoke was dropped in front of our north flank and centre.

We have harassed them as best we could firing blind, but fear we have not done much damage as we can't see to target

However all is clear on our S flank and here we continue our duel with his infantry with our artillery and panzers.

Our AT gun crew have been taken out by the fierce combined rifle fire of the Red infantry though.

and we have rallied as many of Wahler's fusiliers as we currently can

What orders Herr General?

German Orders for Turn 9

Excellent! Introductions and pleasantries are over. Time to dance a waltz with Jonny Ivan in this field!

Gruppe A. Continue stonking the infantry with the mortars and 120s. Panthers on the flank and Tigers to commence cautious advance towards and even into the barrage to close assault enemy infantry. Panthers on the hill to provide overwatch and a rally point for rallying infantry. Kleinwalde if he has nothing much to do can start to scout along the road to his front rounding up labour, letting tyres down and ripping magnetos out. Infantry to rally in front of the HQs and dig in.

Group B. If we can, call the 150s in immediately on our side of the enemy smoke screen. If that's not an option shift their fire onto the infantry in front of gruppe A if we can. Rally any infantry we can on northern end of Hill243 and dig in. Armour: Rapid re-position at a sprint SW onto the hill to close up with HQs and prepare to join the armoured left hook.

Time to drive for the road and encircle!

Vorwarts!

I believe I mean SE!!!!!!!! Close up with HQs should be clear enough!

-By Gad that was close! I did wonder about charging off to SW!

Report to Soviets after Turn 8

Comrade!

After some persuasion from Commissar Formanov, backed up by the sinister Munbski and Gillovitch of the NKGB, the batteries of Benvorod and Fimystor miraculously found enough smoke rounds to cover the most vulnerable points of the N flank and centre.

-Yessssd

-Victory!!! At last

-Tell me of the victory

Your tanks and men have used the cover to rush forward, despite some harassing Hun artillery fire, but the smokescreen will lift next turn.

To the S, Mumvyod continues to do some harassing of their own against the enemy panzers, and have also taken out an AT gun crew, whilst he rallies his tanks once again.

They are gradually being worn down however.

What orders Comrade?

Soviet Orders for Turn 9

All we can do is keep going, get close and start knocking out panzers

Make contact with the nearest enemy on that hill and lock them out, then hold the hill

In the north just keep attacking

The German ranks actually look pretty thin, keep pressing

Can we have air and artillery attacking their rear units too

In fact bombardment of their southern units, the ones on the S part of the hill

-Air support is random  and you can only call in artillery on what your troops can see,  but TBH you were already hitting his infantry quite far back before you switched to laying a smoke screen.
-The Germans may be thin, but their armour is thick

Report to Germans after Turn 9

Herr General!

To the North, Gruppe B just got your order correction in time and were long gone when the smoke screen lifted, revealing some very surprised Soviets!

Our pummelling of their front elements with our 150s put them off their aim so they failed to hit a single of our redeploying panzers!

your infantry here are now recovered enough to move forward in front of your HQ

In the centre the smoke lifted to reveal a force of T-34s, who proceeded to make a terrible, rattling din on our armour as their shells bounced off our Panthers whilst we coolly picked off three quarters of their battalion

Your Tigers and Panthers to the south advanced to close quarters, but could see little through their vision slits and, despite being shelled by our 105s, it gave the opposition an opportunity to break out the molotov cocktails and toast the sides of our panzers.

In minutes nearly half your advancing panzers are ablaze.

Kleinwalde reports he has started to machine gun the trucks along the road, and some have started to pull back

What Orders Herr General?

Orders from Germans for Turn 10

How can you send forward the Panzers without infantry support!! .......oh.....there is no infantry support. No matter. Carry on.

-ve ver juzt vollowing orders

Gruppe A. If Spandl at Gruppe  B can draw a bead bring the 150s as well as the 120s and mortars down on the infantry causing havoc with our tanks

Gruppe A armoured assault through the barrage may as well continue until they clear the other side with support fires from their back ups on the hill. Gruppe A infantry to continue to dig in in front of my HQ.

Gruppe B cautious advance onto the forward slope; leap frog attack and continue to demolish armour as priority. If any of their infantry can move up in support all the better. If Spandl can't shift the 150s onto infantry in front of Gruppe A then hit any infantry to his own front.

No enemy artillery or mortar fire at the moment?

Kleinwalde. Cause havoc and recon towards the road that is our final objective.

How many turns left and how many rounds for the artillery? Count up how many prisoners we have and no. of enemy wrecks that are visible.

Vorwarts!

-this will be turn 10 of 16

-you have 3 rounds of HE artillery left

Any Guards Armour taken out yet?

-the ones in front of the Panthers were Guard

Excellent! Is it easier or harder to close assault tanks with their pedals to the metal?

-makes no difference

In which case sprint out of the otherside

This is fun.

Not for the chaps bailing in flames of course

-which way are B panzers advancing?

-Yes, it's really kicked off!

Why straight forward to be sure! Don't get them enmeshed amongst enemy infantry though but approach, battering then with HE and Case until own infantry get up..

Report to Soviets after Turn 9

Comrade!

To the N, the smokescreen lifted to reveal the fascists panzers have scooted!

We tried some long shots, but their artillery barrage is spoiling our aim.

In the centre the smoke dissipated to reveal a company of Panthers.

Your tank battalion here immediately opened up but all their shells bounced of the Hun armour!

The Panthers returned fire and have taken out 3/4 of the battalion!

To the S, we have tried raising the artillery, but clearly they are delayed switching back to HE shell and no fire came in this turn.

The Panzers here charged into their own barrage to get to close quarters!

We greeted them with a heady mixture of mines and molotov cocktails!

Within minutes we had almost half their panzers ablaze!

Za Rodinu!

Za Stalina!

Mumvyod reports a Fascist motorcyclist has started riding up and down his trucks machine-gunning them.

What orders Comrade?

Orders from Soviets for Turn 10

Send our own brave motorcyclist Timonovich to harass their rear

-You have Litwodskya's entire motorcycle battalion sitting cooling their heels behind that hill!
-In fact they seem to have got bored and been at the vodka

Are they? send them forward they must attack his rear!

CHATCO!

Litwodskya....sounds unreliable

CHATCO!!!!!!!!

we must keep pressing them in the south
sat the centre it is madness, but we must close with those panthers, the shots won't bounce off at close range....forward!!!!
swamp them with infantry too...if there are any?

CHATCO!!! sung in deep manly voices

CHATCO!!!!

-whatabout in the N?

FORWARD!!!! to flank the hill and retake it from the beasts!
Look, there is the Quisling SS man Alun Fjordisson

KILL HIM!

Kill Kill

FORWARD

CHATCO

C

!!!!

bring up some AT too

-your AT is already up (what's left)

super!

-Everything is up except that skulking Litwodskya
-and your personal command tank

oh send me up too

to inspire the Soviets

C H A T C O !

CHATCO!

I have no regard to my personal safety...send me forward

-Well frankly you're facing a firing squad after this if you are lucky so nothing to lose really
-oh and your 85mm AT guns, I nearly forgot about those. They've been waiting patiently behind the hill crest as well
-You might as well leave them there, he'll only take them out whilst they are moving otherwise
-He almost moved close enough to see them then skedaddled, his centre just needs to close a little to make it worthwhile revealing them.
-Then Bashvyod can open up!
-Classic maskirovka!

They were told to be on the hill....not behind
well...too late....CHATCO!!!!
they're behind the crest thing was for 257
my really clever tactic of leaving a force to sweep out and deal with his encirclement went very well

-257?
-when I say behind, I mean on just behind the crest

ahhhh

great

Report to Germans after Turn 10

Herr General!

To the S, the remnants of your Panthers and Tigers here have broken through to the Soviet rear!

But at great cost.

Isaksen's Tiger company is destroyed, although we may be able to regroup some of them

The Panther company that was so reluctant before however are the ones are in the rear, led personally by Panzer ace Jan Towan himself.

He reports that he passed a smouldering motorbike and sidecar and fears for the safety of Kleinwalde!

In the centre your other Panther company, now reinforced by Gruppe B Panzers, hold back all that the Reds can throw at them.

They now have a nice row of burning T-34s to their front.

Not such good news to the N though, as the reds have made a dash for your flank and have, despite some losses themselves, taken out more of Gruppe B's panzer force, including the Staff radio Pzbef III of Von Spandl!

What Orders Herr General?

Orders from Germans for Turn 11

Any enemy infantry still to the front of the left flank?

-You still have plenty of enemy infantry on your S flank
-And your N flank

How much infantry do we have to hand and where is it?

-You have two platoons on n flank
-The rest are gathered around your HQ
-About 5 platoons

Ach Zo!

Gruppe B Panzers towards N end of hill swivel to bring enemy on flank under fire.

Gruppe B Panzers near my HQ stay to engage enemy infantry on S flank.

Gruppe B Infantry hold their ground. If there's anyone to call the 150s in call it onto the nearest enemy infantry

Gruppe A Panthers on hill shift cautiously northward to bolster that flank and bring enemy flankers under fire.

Try and rally a Tiger or two on my HQ.

Gruppe A infantry support left flank Gruppe B Panzers in holding off enemy infantry on that side. Continue stonking said infantry with the 105s and mortars.

Jan Towan advance cautiously northward along each side of the road seeking enemy tear echelon targets of opportunity. He is particularly directed to pay attention that suspicious little knot of people on top of the ridge behind which the hopefully wrecked Stalin Organs were.

Try and raise poor Kleinwalde on the blower

This is getting like Starship Troopers with the constant tide of foes!

They must surely break soon!

All very realistic.......so much so I may go and soak a rag in diesel and set fire to it

Report to Soviets after Turn 10

Comrade!

To the S, We have taken out many of their panzers, but a small group have broken through!

Homesavitch has sent his recon scout car over who has put paid to that pesky motorcycle machinegunner though!

In the Centre we continue to throw T-34s at their Panthers, but they are like a wall of steel!

But to the N, we made a dash for their flank, and are poised to round on it, despite some losses.

We have given a few in return!

Your personal example of heroics, shouting patriotic slogans through your megaphone as you advance, has greatly inspired us!

What Orders Comrade?

Orders from Soviets for Turn 11

My orders!

CHATCO!!!!

Flank them to the N

Elsewhere keep pushing them

Send mobile units or use AT to crush any who have made it though

Onwards! To the inevitable victory of the proletariat!

Report to Germans after Turn 11

Herr General!

Towan has advanced along the road, and revealed a clutch of AT guns behind the hill!
They immediately open fire, but Towan goes into Battle Rage!
He fires off in all directions!
A T-34 sneaking up on his flank is the first to go!
Next one of the AT guns bursts into flames!
Surely the rest cannot have long to live!

On your S flank, the infantry continue to close and your fusiliers behind your HQ are now under fire.
Your HQ and surrounding fusiliers have also come under renewed mortar fire as well!
In the centre, some of the T-34s have charged past and are opening up on the flank of your tanks!
One of the Panthers gets it as it turns, as does a Panzer IV!
But their isn't much left of the enemy armour here either!

A battle royale is occurring on the S flank
The Reds have also rushed you here in a suicidal charge with tanks and men!
You take out many of them, but they also take advantage of your vulnerable side armour and take out many of your panzers!
Including Von Spandl's Command tank!
Two Panthers, and a Panzer III feed the growing conflagration!

and more tanks are regrouping to the S from the first batch you took out!
Leibe Gott!
You have managed to regroup a Tiger platoon but you are now losing armour fast!

What Orders Herr General?

German Orders for Turn 12

Gott unt Himmel! Is there no end to them?

Jan Towan. Pause to take out those A/T Guns and anybody wearing a larger than normal hat.

Tiger. Pull up alongside me. Time to have a command tank! Then engage all comers. Gruppe A infantry support HQ and Tiger. Rally any of the panthers that we can. Keep stonking the approaching infantry with 105s and mortars.

Gruppe B mop up break throughs in the centre turning to cover north flank and taking on the rest of that flanking. Support with what infantry there is available to keep enemy infantry at length.

If any one can spot for Gruppe B bring the 150s down onto closest infantry

Any crews without tanks......take T34s if you have to!

*Grabs Schmeisser and a bandolier of potato mashers*

Report to Soviets after Turn 11

Comrade!

The panzers are right up our rear!

They have discovered Bashvyod's AT guns!

He reports he has opened up, but has already lost one gun!

To the S you continue to close as we finally get through to Benvorod's Mortars again, who open up on the Fascist foot soldiers surrounding their HQ.

In the centre and N your brave comrades have conducted a suicidal charge!

They have taken many casualties but this allowed them to get around the vulnerable rear and flanks of the enemy armour, who also being on the move thanks to your inspired flanking manoeuvre could not just sit their and pick them off before they could get past!

We have finally taken out the Panthers who have cremated so many comrades in the centre!

You yourself personally directed your command tank into the fray...before you wisely pulled back to preserve your person, at the pleadings of Commissar Formanov!

You have taken out most of the tanks here in the S now! and already many of your tanks regroup to charge again!

What Orders Comrade?

Orders from Soviets for Turn 12

the pictures are indecipherable .....HURAHHH!

You know what we must do....don't you?

how many panzers are in the rear? Only one on that picture

-two panthers in your rear, there are two if you look carefully!

oh sod them...the at guns can play with them

charge the tanks! charge the infantry! we will crush them

lay on!

-The Panthers are Jan Towan's crack panzers!

-He went into a fuhrer like rant when he saw Bashyod's AT guns!

2 85mm to knock them out

hahaha

have we got anything to send back to help them?

-Hahaha

-Mumvyod might be able to reach him

I take that as a no

no....we press forward

-That's one of his T34s. Burning in the picture

that's what they are for

onward!!!

-Mumvyod and Bashvyod ganging up on Towan!

it has a certain appeal

ok send mumyvod back

the rest (if there is a rest) person

press on

Report to Germans after Turn 12

Herr General!

Our infantry have taken out much of the first wave of Red infantry

but they have been engulfed by the tide!

and your Artillery chief, Greigputsch, reports his ammunition is now exhausted!

Red Infantry also closes in from the south, and more tanks have made suicidal charges from the South but you are holding them for now, and  there seems to be no more armour in the south and centre

Much seems to be gathering and regrouping to the north however.

As you ponder from the back of your newly requisitioned Tiger, Kleinwalde suddenly appears!

He is looking a little singed and his spectacles are askew and one lens is cracked.

He salutes and begins to make a report when his eyes widen into saucers as he looks behind you

"Himmel!" he exclaims!

and points, for racing from the North is that notorious ex-partisan Litwodskya! in a motely collection of scout cars, bikes and halftracks he is over running what is left of your infantry!

But whilst your infantry buys time you have managed to regroup two PzIVs

and to the West Jan Towan reports he has taken out another kamikaze T34 and the AT guns are silenced, either destroyed or their crews have run.

He has also regrouped two Panthers doubling his strength!

What Orders Herr General?

Orders from Germans for Turn 13

Zo! By my reckoning looking at the photos I have a Tiger, 2 PzIVs and a rag tag of infantry to the south by my HQ.

Another 2 rallied PzIV over by Spandl's former HQ and a PzIII on the N end of the hill with some infantry
4 Panthers way over by the road to the west

???

No artillery apart from smoke mission. Do we still have rounds for the mortars?

Main enemy armoured threat is on my north flank?

-No Pz III left, otherwise correct. You can not see any T34s anywhere except to N...none -that are not burning that is...
-...there may be a few T70s lurking somewhere, but none that you can see
-you only have one mortar, a 120mm, which may have a couple of rounds left
-you have a couple of platoons of fusiliers left, and might be able to regroup one more

Right. Leave the two PzIVs and any infantry to defend S end of hill. Call in a mortar stonk on nearest enemy infantry.

Raise high the Black flag on the Tiger's antenna and trundle it over giving Kleinwald a ride to support the two other PzIV against the death ride of the recon group. Cautious .....but we will literally ram and drive over them if neccessary. We will then prep to blast that armour into burning gobbets.

Any infantry to the north to retire on me. Any rallied infantry to rally on me. In fact anything that might rally, rally on me

Jan Towan bring his Panthers back to Hill 243 pronto making sure he keeps his distance from all that Ivan infantry to S and North. ......ie right across the centre.

Vorwärts und rückwärts und seitwärts!

No Pity! I shall kill the first man I see who has pity in there eyes!

Report to Soviets for Turn 12

Comrade!

Your infantry have thrown themselves forward with true patriotic fervour!

although mown down by the hated fascists they have taken out all the infantry to the North!

Litwodskya has overun much of their rear!

and to the South Mumvyod's infantry continues to close on the Fascist HQ

The remnants of Mumvyod's and Homesavitch's tanks made another suicidal charge and their deaths for the motherland where spectacular

We will sing songs of their valiant sacrifice.

Bashvyod reports all his AT guns are now out of action,

and no, you aren't seeing double. The panthers have regrouped!

More Fascist tanks have also regrouped in their centre on the Hill

But Yantoveyn has also taken the opportunity to regroup some more T-34s

One last push might do it!

For the Motherland!

for Stalin!

and for Chatco!

What Orders Comrade?

Orders from Soviets for Turn 13

You know my orders
ONWARD!!! CHATCO!
take the hill and importantly destroy their HQ

Yantoveyn...move in...crush them
I expect the off board artillery is useless against the regrouped panthers?

-yes, but it would supress them, however if I were you I'd concentrate on the hill. If you recall in you have to throw with 50% chance of success

Then the hill it is

The panthers can drive around and look at the empty town or hill

Report to Germans after Turn 13

Herr General!

With alacrity you and Kleinwalde have swivelled the Tiger around and headed North.

Just in time as T-34s, in line abreast, charge towards your beleaguered PzIVs.

You have no time to take on Litwodsya's recon as the tanks make it hot for you

Honours are even, but you and the remnants of the Pz IVs here are forced to fall back

At least you are now in a good position to pick them off in flank!

Meanwhile, your Generalstab, Vormann, patiently herds together the remaining PzIIIs, despite coming under a deafening barrage and being surrounded by fire from Red Infantry

He estimates you have enough runners left to muster perhaps another PzIV next turn but that's it!

The Pz IVs guarding your S flank have mown down the first wave of Red infantry

and Jan Towan charges across the plain, desperate to join the fight!

What orders Herr General?

Orders from Germans for Turn 14

Splendidly messy. Proper Kursk Joust!
Another wave of infantry in front of the PzIVs to south? and where have the PzIIIs rallied?

-Yes you have infantry coming in on all three sides!
-Except to SW
-PzIII has rallied next to sdkfz 250/1 of Vormann (should be in the pictures?)
-ah, it is but obscured by the barrage!

Ah yes. It has a PzIV beside it that appears not be aflame yet?

-Yes
-Current tally, 3xpzIV, 1xpzIII, 4xpanther, 1xTiger
-Actually if you do lose another couple of panthers you might be able to rally one more
-And you would need to lose 1 more pzIV before rallying one back.
-You can rally back at the rate of 2 losses to 1 rally, but can't regroup the same stand twice

Don't suppose there's any chance of finding a working Flammepzr in all this mess?

-Nope, you only had one, and can only do the 2 for 1 deal with stands of the same type

Can't fault me for trying :)
How many turns left?

-Three

Where will the PzIV rally?

-Depends who does the rallying, has to be under cmd it started at so basically either you, Vormann, Spandl or the company commander
-If the company commander hasn't been toasted
-Or any of the other aforementioned for that matter
-You can't move and rally

Excellent. I believe previous order indicates all rallies to be on the Tiger with the black flag!
I don't need to move. I just need to shoot

-Well that's ok then!
-Technically I don't think you are supposed to shoot either, but that's too boring so I've used Bradspiel privilege to ignore that!

Ach Zo! Rally to me. My Tiger and the PzIV with me to take out that line of T34s we have in enfilade
PzIV and PzIII on the hill with Vormann pepper that infantry to their front coming from the W. Just shoot! A lot.
PzIV and infantry on S of hill hold as best they can see if they can't mow down the next wave from that direction
Jan Towan's leading Panthers if they have targets where they are pause and blast away ......if not cautious move NW into the general fracas killing anything they come across.
Jan Towan's rearmost Panthers cautious move west shotting anything visible to either side as they go. Mainly infantry I think, but if they spot anything with aerials that has priority.
Any surviving infantry hunker down and support nearest friendly armour.

-West?!?

Ahhhhhhhhrg. Bloody East!

-Nearly had them heading off in the wrong direction!

Yes. Pzr IV and III engage enemy E. Jan Towan advance E and NE
Keep any mortars on enemy infantry in S

Report to Soviets after Turn 13

Comrade!

Yantoveyn has charged forward onto the hill with what is left of his T-34s!

Careless of any loss, they have dashed themselves with abandon against a wall of Fascist steel!

What is now not burning they have forced to retreat!

Meanwhile your infantry close on all sides!

Bashvyod and Mumvyod report they has observed the Panthers charging across the plain towards the hill.

Their leader looks furious!

Comissar Formanov has managed to cobble another couple of T70s together but that's it!

We have nothing left we can throw forward!

Except perhaps a few more infantry!

What Orders Comrade!

Orders From Soviets for Turn 14

Gosh
T70 v Panther... ermmm

-Yeah good luck with that! Pretty much everything has been bouncing off!

What’s left of his HQ? I want that overwhelmed If possible
And what (if any T34s) are left and where?
Or AT? Presumably the panthers will have to be in a smoke covered scrap yard to see us and open up? Can we have men with satchel charged hiding amongst the wrecks waiting for them?

-Just Yantoveyn's lot of T34s left, 5 or 6?
-You have 1 45mm AT gun
-1 85mm AT gun, which may be remanned after next turn
-And a clutch of ATRs

What’s he got left?
But the 85mm is miles off

-Yes the 85 is miles away!
-His HQ has decamped to a Tiger, you can tell by the black flags raised high above it.

Ha!

-He has 4 panthers, 2? PzIVs, 1 pzIII and a Tiger, that you can see

Wow
Hideous slaughter
Great!

So Yanto takes in the Tiger or turns to the Panthers?
Hummm
I want the infantry to continue hunting fascists on the hill. They may even find all our comrades who allowed themselves to be captured (bit of re-education needed there)
Others lie in wait for those Panthers if they can

Hummm
He must be furious
And that’s so important to us all I think

-No, he's thoroughly enjoying it!

They take on the Tiger (with infantry support) do anything they can to knock it out

-Who take on the Tiger?

The T34s if they are near enough
If they aren’t they lie in hiding amongst the burning wrecks and try and pop the Panthers when they enter hell

-The wrecks don't give you any cover

Really? Booo

Then they hunt the Tiger
If they are close enough
And my tank too

If we can do it and capture Krafthollern, we bundle him onto a motorbike and sidecar and he goes East until about 1958
If they capture me I join the RONA and the British give me to the Russians in 45 and I end up in the East until about 1978

So it’s a win win

Report to Germans after Turn 14

Herr General!

Wahler's Fusiliers have all been wiped out to a man.

Including Wahler

So has Greigputsch's Artillery OP, we told him to withdraw now that his batteries had exhausted their ammunition, but he refused, and died like a true hero of the Reich!

Your Generalstab Vormann has also gone up in a ball of fire with his command halftrack.

Together with all the remaining PzIVs, although you might scrape together one last platoon from the remnants.

Vormann had been at your side since Poland in '39.

Your command Tiger has also been taken out.

Peppered by shell, a luck shot ricocheted inside off Kleinwalde as he yelled in excitement from the turret hatch.

You yourself managed to jump off before it brewed up.

As it explodes a pair of bent spectacles goes flying into the air before landing accusingly, inches from your feet.

Only one PzIII remains in the centre.

and Jan Towan's Panthers, who advance towards the hill.

Bullets and shell make a terrible knell of doom as they bounce off his armour. Systematically he mows down the red tide. His normally cold, austere face red in a grimace of supressed emotion, a sweat soaked forelock of hair plastered to his forehead.

He has, at least, taken out all the infantry to the S, but many more infest the hill to the centre and north.

and although we have taken out more of the T-34s, some still remain.

What Orders Herr General?

Orders from Germans for Turn 15

Take the black flag and Kleinwalde's spectacles into the nearest rye field with the radio truck and wait for the PzIV to rally.

Jan Towan All Panthers to cautious move along hill northwards to clear it of enemy. Halt as soon as have targets.

Pnzr III and any surviving infantry take on nearest infantry at range

If Jan Towan could lend me one of his Panthers or have one blown up so it can rally back on me, all the better.

This is Glorious!

Report to Soviets after Turn 14

Comrade!

We advance on all the fronts!

And all the rears!

We have destroyed all their HQs!

Only a PzIII remains in the centre, surrounded by a burning maelstrom of destruction!

and the Panthers, always the Panthers!

They advance like indestructible demons! Mowing down all who dare approach!

But Yantoveyn has showered the Tiger with every gun he has available!

well almost every gun!

and on the last shell it has gone up in flames!

A bespectacled fellow in a General's cap jumped off the rear at the last minute, he looks in a cold fury!

CHATCO!

What Orders Comrade?

Orders from Soviets for Turn 15

CHATCO!
This is insane! We must capture him and he must join me for vodka tonight....if I live!
do they have any infantry left?
Do we have any tanks?
Whatever happens we have to knock out the Panzer IV and the panthers. I've just been reading about T70s doing just that...somehow.
If I have any T70s left?
is anybody left?

-yes you have tanks
-all his infantry are toast as far as you can tell

Good God
Well we have to take on the panthers and the IV
and capture Krafthollern!
I will have to throw my own tank in to the fray too, at this rate he and I will be the only ones walking out of this
what Have I got left? Can you tell me or do I have to work it out from pictures? Is that 85mm back?

-It's a pzr III left
-You have about 6 T34s and 2 T70s

I think at this point both sides would be wandering off with ptsd

-They were probably all on amphetamines!

WEEEEEEE!

Right....it nears the end
Hummm
can my artillery suppress the panthers?

-2 turns left, yes they can, if you manage to call them in, but you have three mortars that can self spot, two of which are already supressing them

good
any recon left?

-You or him?

either!

-Litwodskya is intact
-Apart from a couple of stands
-Frankly the krauts don't have much left that you can tell

that's what worries me
But that's academic at this stage of the game.
Suppress the Panthers best we can and all the tanks try and get in shots at the lead 2, unless they are near the Pz3
If the 85mm is recreated saddle it up and get it east!
any AT rifles, sharp stones, anything at those tanks

Report to Germans after Turn 15

Herr General!

Jan Towan sent one company Northwards, but kept the other where it was as it was confronted by a mass of red infantry who rushed his position like madmen!

There were too many of them and a lucky molotov has seen off the scourge of the steppe!

His remaining platoon has careered wildly backwards and is now pinned on the plain.

The other company headed cautiously along the hill, sneaking past Litwodskya's devils

As they closed with the remaining T-34s a hammering of shell bounced off their armour!

There were many hits, but not one penetrated their steel!

However, they were then assailed by another rush of fanatic red infantry!

Another molotov has put paid to another platoon of panthers!

You were just about to jump onto the staff truck....

...when it exploded almost in your face!

A sneaky T70 has taken it out from behind you!

You manage to regroup one last platoon of PzIVs, not your preferred mount but it'll do.

You are about to climb aboard when glancing around, some way off, you see a pair of legs waving in the air seemingly embedded in the steppe

Tracking over you get a couple of crewmen to pull on the boots and Kleinwalde appears at the end of the legs!

He is looking a little muddy and worn, but otherwise none the worse for wear!

It seems it was Isaksen who was caught in the ricochet, and Kleinwalde was blown clear!

Shaking your head in disbelief, you absently fish a pair of bent spectacles out of your top pocket and carelessly hand them to Kleinwalde as you listen to his unlikely tale.

He thanks you profusely and declares himself ready for action once again!

You now have one PzIII (still holding out in the centre), two Panthers (one pinned) and your newly reconstituted PzIV.

You can now regroup a remaining Panther, but it will be too late to do anything

Last Turn

What Orders Herr General?

Orders from Germans for  Turn 16 (last turn)

Did we kill any enemy armour?

-No, if you had I would have mentioned it!
-You scared off one T70 with your PzIII, and took out a few of the suicidal infantry
-Your panthers were too busy keeping the reds from climbing on their turrets and tossing grenades through the hatches!
-Your aim is also being put off my the constant harassing artillery and mortar fire
-If any of your boys get out of this they're going to have to hammer out a few dents

Too bloody many of them. The litany of the Eastern Front. Pull out.

Driving the long way around their bloody infantry

Kleinwalde is promoted to a Panther recon platoon

That T70 can have some though

My PzIV to cover the retirement. All others cautious well away from enemy infantry and keep shooting.

Report to Soviets After Turn 15

Comrade!

Half the panthers have advanced northwards

Your T-34s opened up with everything against the northward group, they scored many hits but they all bounced off!

Your infantry opened up with every ATR in range, and again everything bounced off the rhino-skinned fascist beasts!

But your brave troops have rushed both groups!

They have taken out half the remaining panthers with molotovs and sprinting to stick AT Mines under their tracks.

One of the remaining panthers has retreated in haste back over the steppe.

Further South, Yantoveyn in his command A/C and one of your remaining T-70s opened up against the last PzIII, but still can't take it out!

However another of your T-70s has taken out a staff truck just as the previously mentioned spectacled officer was about to climb aboard!

He just shrugs and has pulled together a last PzIV which he has climbed aboard.

Last Turn

What Orders Comrade?

Soviet Orders for Turn 16 (last turn)

Well... this is all a bit of a surprise
You can guess the orders
Take out the panther that isn’t running away
And the PZiii

Same tactics if we can
We have reached the moment of CHATCO
Did that AT gun ever get recrewed?
We could do with a Sturmovik to deal with that scooting Panthe
Have we got anything left to bring up to the hill?

That’s all we can do!

-The AT gun was recrewed, currently trundling across the steppe towed by a tractor. Your air cover is long since exhausted

Excellent, can it unlimber and have a pop at run away panther?

CHATCO!!!

Even if the worst happens his victory parade is going to be a bit thin.

Summing up Turn 16

Well Gentlemen we have reached the last turn, The Soviets took out a last Panther in a final barrage from some ATR rifles.

and in a truly sublime ending, both commanders engaged in a personal duel, taking out each others tanks!

Krafthollern moving his flag to his third mount of the battle, from a Pz IV to a hastily regroupped Panther.

At the end the German assault on Hill 243 has been repulsed and thrown back

The Germans have one PzIII and two Panthers left

The soviets have 5 T-34s and 2 T-70s, plus seemingly endless hordes of infantry and sundries

This means the Germans lost the equivalent of c.85 out of 100  tanks

The Russians c.110 of  145 tanks

and hordes of sundries of course

What a mess!
Beautiful!
My guess is both side would claim victory, but nobody left for the victory parade, so the whole thing would be swept under the carpet
Did any German infantry etc survive? Or any surrender?
Of course he will blame it on the Romanians

-No Kraut infantry survived
-You even took out Wahler's Fusilier HQ
-And Greigputsch's artillery OP

I could see his beady eyes and neatly trimmed beard as he looked towards me peering through the smoke

I could see the fires reflected in your broken spectacles

They were Kleinwalde’s broken spectacles ....we got confused in all the hasty remounting
