Operation: Icestorm

The big news from Corvus Belli right now is the release of the Operation: Icestorm starter set, and oh what a starter set! It is only natural that this set will draw comparisons with the starter sets of other games produced by other manufacturers. For my part I usually avoid such things as they tend to be cheap rip offs. Not so with Icestorm.

The first surprise I got was the size of the box. It's small, only about a third of the size of my DeadZone box set (this is a rough estimate, I've not actually measured them). The box art is lovely and glossy as you would expect for a professional product. The sides of the box show the miniatures in all their glory.

So popping the box open reveals the above. The Introductory rules and terrain pack are underneath with 2 box sets of miniatures on top. A pack of 6 dice and the Corporate Security Unit (if you pre-ordered) is on the left.

The really stand out feature of Icestorm is the miniatures! Yes they are of the standard you would expect from Corvus Belli, and they are all metal! Yes, if you had not already heard the models in the starter set are all metal. Not cheap plastic replicas that you might normally find in starter sets. Sure plastics have improved a lot, but there is something about metal models that just feels better. The box also includes 2 limited edition models, the Father-Knight for PanOceana and the Reverend Healer for the Nomads. Although the starter box miniatures will be release as box sets in their own right, the limited editions will not be, Icestorm is the only way to get them.

Operation: Icestorm Terrain

Here is a quick shot of the card terrain laid out on the mat. Okay so the mat isn't big enough for a full game being only 2' x 3', but the terrain set will also be available separately and when I get anther one that will allow me to play on a 6' x 4' board. Also the card building are very cool and allow you to slide a miniatures box inside them to give them greater rigidity.

All things considered, best starter set, for any game, EVER!
